Amidst the heat wave and me trying to edit down my current WIP fic (I need weed killer! It cannot grow!), I've been listening and/or watching old anime series I'd enjoyed in the past.

We'll Need a Few Billion Dollar Budget. )

I put together my study guides and reviewed my chapters for one of my classes.

And I finished the last two episodes of the anime Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok.

The final main "villain" story was annoyingly nonsensical and underwhelming. I could see what the writers were trying to do with this theme of loneliness and your past haunting you, but the reasoning behind why this particular antagonist was targeting Loki was ridiculous.

Still....the last episode. I watched it knowing there could only be one of two possible conclusions. And I felt okay about either one. So I watched without much emotion or anticipation. And then the last scene happened and...and...

NO, THAT WAS NOT A TEAR IN MY EYE, DAMMIT! I'M JUST TIRED FROM STUDYING!!

In between studying for my upcoming finals, I caught up on the Saiyuki Reload mangas. And HOMG the Hazel arc!!

The anime’s version of this arc had left me under whelmed so I wasn’t exactly itching to read about it. But little did I know that Minekura had a different story in mind for this storyline. Certain elements remain the same, but there are key differences such as the attack on Goku and the more blatant involvement of Ukoku that made my fannish heart dance with delight.

Under the cut is my general flail, theorizing, and squeeage over the events and most importantly over the ever interesting Nii/Ukoku.

I can't be the only watcher of the Saiyuki Gaiden episodes who hasn't noticed the similarities between Tenpou and Nii, can I?

WARNING: Ahead is quite possibly loose-limbed, loose-brained rambling from someone who just recently watched Saiyuki Reload Burial OAV Episode 1.

For those who haven't seen or read the anime/manga Saiyuki, it's basically a re-imagined take on the "Journey to the West" myth. And by re-imagined I mean REALLY re-imagined. How else were we going to get a character quite so frustrating and endlessly interesting like Nii Jianyi?

When you first meet Dr. Nii Jianyi, he’s comes off as a little…kooky. He’s one of the head scientists working on the resurrection of Gyuuma (so he's technically on the enemy team), but seems to spend most of his time taunting his colleagues and inventing random things with which to mess with the Sanzo Party. What will probably make most people think Nii isn’t firing with all rockets is his appearance. Usually disheveled and slovenly, he shuffles around in a lab coat and bunny slippers. To match the slippers, he also has a bunny plushie that he carries around with him at all times and even talks to it like it’s alive. And when he’s feeling particularly creepy, he talks THROUGH it like it’s his mouthpiece.

But beneath this supposed odd behavior is an evil genius. Whether or not he’s a crazy evil genius is still up for debate. But he’s definitely perceptive, calculating, manipulative and oh so much fun to watch. He didn’t seem a very important player in the overall story arc and mainly kept to the sidelines, throwing out those acerbic oneliners that always made those around him gnash their teeth in frustration and anger as he always intends. He spoke a lot in riddles and generally seemed to enjoy just annoying people which is always a character trait I seem to like in the stories I read.

But then it was revealed who Nii used to be and my interest in the character went tenfold.

Wow, I'm currently cleaning my apartment in a very top to bottom way where I'm finally, FINALLY throwing out some stuff that needs to be thrown out. And as a packrat, let me tell you that is NOT easy. But it's kind of random what I've been able to find in clearing out every corner of my very small apartment. For instance, I've "found" that my talent for shoving objects into every available nook and cranny is still with me.

One thing I did make a point of dragging out was a box of miscellaneous items that's been sitting in the back of my coat closet. In it were a bunch of anime DVDs that a friend of mine left me when he moved to Japan. And I still haven't even opened some of them. I am now (or only just realized now) the owner of what looks like about 200 episodes of One Piece.
